Guided Meditation is an Easy Way to Start Meditating Consistently...

Meditation is difficult.

It’s a simple task, yet there is more to it than what meets the eye.

Meditation challenges you to sit still and clear your mind.

This is much harder than it sounds.

But the rewards of meditation are well worth the effort.

Having a clear mind is one of the greatest feelings you can have.

Not a thought in your mind. No longing for the past. No worrying about the future.

You’re just living in the present moment.

Achieving this state of inner peace has helped me relax. It also improved my productivity and mood.

And it can help you do the same.

Fortunately, meditation doesn’t need to be as difficult as you may believe.

I recently tried guided meditation for 2 weeks. This article will teach you what I learned from the experience.

My prior experience with meditation

Before trying guided meditation, I had been meditating off and on for roughly a year.

I was streaky with it. Sometimes I’d meditate every day for a month. Other times I’d meditate once or twice a week. Keeping it a routine was tough.

It was difficult for me to sit still. Especially when I tried to meditate for longer sessions.

Every second felt like a minute. And every minute felt like an hour.

Each meditation session felt like I was fighting tooth and nail to complete it.

My mind would often fixate on the timer that I set right before I closed my eyes to start the meditation session.

I’d think, “Has it been a minute yet? How much longer do I have left? It’s been a long time, did my phone shut off?” These thoughts would float in my mind for most of the meditation session. And once I finally was able to return back to my breath, more thoughts would pop into my mind.

It was as if a floodgate was released in my mind once I started meditating.

I knew the purpose of meditation is to clear your mind. So I never beat myself up about these struggles.

But I rarely felt rejuvenated after meditating, which made it difficult for me to stick with meditation. I didn’t prioritize it as much because walking provided me with more mental clarity.

I always feel rejuvenated after going for walks, which I use as another form of meditation. My mind would be focused on the present moment, taking in all of the surroundings as I walked.

The guided meditation made it easier to relax

After struggling with keeping meditation in my routine, I realized that I needed to try something different.

So, I decided to give guided meditation a shot.

I searched for a guided meditation video on YouTube. And then I followed along with the video, which was roughly 5 minutes long.

The background music provided a soothing ambiance that helped me relax. It surprisingly didn’t distract me. The music was simple. It was mostly one note or one chord sustained for long periods of time.

The voice-over was also soothing. The way the meditation leader spoke felt like the words were melting in my ears. Maybe ASMR is actually relaxing?

The speaker provided reminders to relax throughout the guided meditation. She told me to relax my entire body, squeezing and releasing tense muscles if I needed to. She also reminded me to breathe slow, deep breaths from my diaphragm, not my chest.

The meditation session was relaxing. I felt rejuvenated after.

And I felt this way each time I meditated with the guided session!

Meditation had become easy for me. And I got more of the benefits from it.

My mind wandered less

During the guided meditation sessions, my mind rarely wandered. I focused on the voice-over prompts the entire time. And when the speaker stopped speaking, I focused on the simple tasks they had told me to do. Focus on breathing slowly and deeply. Feeling the blood flow through each part of my body. And relaxing my muscles.

My mind became too preoccupied with these tasks to start drifting off! I never thought, “When is this session going to be done?”

It was great to feel present during the guided meditation session. This feeling of presence carried on throughout the day as I completed other tasks such as cooking, doing work, and reading

My mind wandered less throughout the day.

Taking just a few minutes to rest your mind each day can boost your focus!

Each guided meditation session helped me clear my mind. I felt the mental clarity improve my mood and focus as well.

Time flew by

Each guided meditation session felt quick. It seemed like the meditation session was over after it had just begun.

After the session ended, I’d ask myself, “It’s done already?”

Time doesn’t slow down like it does during regular meditation sessions for me.

Instead, time flies by.

As the old saying goes, “Time flies when you’re having fun.”

I found that I wanted to meditate for longer after each guided meditation session ended.

So, I would replay the video. Or I would continue meditating after the video ended.
